burum hanik at my brother’s wedding

Traditions have been integrated within our society for so long, making us a community, and when we come together to celebrate it makes our bond as a community even stronger. Hunza is rich in culture and traditions which are now fading away. there are many traditions we don’t get to see, some that we only hear of, and some that have vanished completely. these days when it comes to fulfilling our traditions people find it very frustrating and hard and because of this attitude, we are unable to keep our traditions alive . one such tradition called burum hanik exists and is still practiced across Hunza. the tradition of burum hanik is carried out whenever something new is initiated such as at weddings, when a newborn baby is born, at the Ginanni festival, and many more events. to get blessings, burum hanik tradition is carried out. if we look deeply into this tradition, especially at weddings burum hanik is prepared. Hanik consists of roti ( flat bread ) with diram phiti and lots of butter on it.

diram phiti

Hanik is given to neighbours and close ones in order to get blessings for the new couple and to establish fellowship. Diram phiti is a traditional local sweet dish of Hunza. Made of sprouted wheat. It’s been a huge part of traditional rituals here in Hunza for a very long time. Diram phiti is baked on special occasions. The tradition of Burum Hanik has been around since the old times, its a very integral part of the wedding rituals. Diram phiti is served with walnut, almond oil, or melted pure butter. Phiti (which means bread in Burushaski ) and the locals here enjoy this delicacy a lot.
